B4FA Fellow Michael Ssali reports: It is now a fact that we are locked into global warming and the current changes in climatic patterns have a direct impact on rainfall variability as well as the frequency of weather extremes. Our TV screens have displayed dying livestock due to severe drought in some parts of Uganda, while in other areas there is almost too much rain.

Unfortunately for us in sub-Saharan Africa, Climate Change has arrived before we have fully embraced irrigation, fertilizers, and improved seeds. The farming innovations that transformed agriculture in many parts of Asia and Latin America in the 70s bypassed sub-Saharan Africa. Average fertiliser usage in Asia and Latin America is 50 kg per hectare as compared to 5 kg per hectare in Sub-Saharan Africa. Read more
