A maize farmer somewhere in Northern Nigeria is observing his crops. He couldn’t help but be amazed at the performance of the crops this planting season.

All things being equal, he is going to have his best harvest in a long time. This is in spite of the fact this has been one of the driest years for some time. Somehow, he is going to get a good harvest even though maize plants need lots of water to thrive.

All this is thanks to the improved seedlings recommended to him by some agric extension workers. He was doubtful at first, but he decided to try the seeds since he had nothing to lose. The seeds were given to him free to try.

This is the end result of genetically modified seeds to produce genetically modified food.

Genetically modified foods (GMF) is a relatively new concept in Nigeria. This is why it is not causing as much furore here as in the more advanced countries of the world.
