Recently the Agricultural Sector Development Forum called on Kenyan farmers to become more entrepreneurial and competitive in order to encourage small-scale economic development and increase Kenya’s food security. Conference participants criticised Kenya’s policies regarding agriculture, a sector that constitutes a significant portion of East Africa’s GDP.  The Agriculture Minister responded that farmers and the private sector must also play their part in developing Kenya’s agricultural sector. The Lands Minister called for idle but fertile land to be put into use, while the chief executive of Equity Bank called for a cultural change  – farming and farmers must be given more respect and should not be viewed as a ‘last resort’ profession.
